Spline Head Modelling part 4

Go to part 1 | Go to part 2 | Back to part 3 | Go to part 5 (comming soon) |

Written by Conny Klasson, december 2003, any comments are welcome.

Select all vertices and set them to "Corner" type,
if you converted them to smooth at the end of part 3.

It's been awhile since we used the reference image. Switch to Left fiew an adjust the eye and nose area to follow the image.
First is the "before" image. Note that this is before the last spline around the eye.
Second and third image is the same "after" image. The second image have the most affected vertices marked.

Before we start with the nose
we need one more spline. Refine as the image and while you are ther smooth the circles around the ear.

Draw a new spline from the ear to under the nose. Make a refine on the last segment under the eye.

Continue the missing spline from the eye down towards the mouth. Weld it to the original spline from the eye.

Time to start with the nose. Switch to front view. Now there's many splines, it getting harder to see clearly.

Right click the view port title i.e. the "Fornt" text. Select "Viewport Clipping" and adjust the upper slider until it looks like the third image. Much easier to work now.

Refine above the eye and down aling the center line of the nose.

Create a new spline from the corner of the eye all away round the eye end down the nose to the mouse.

But wait, isn't that a three sided patch? Yes, try to keep them as close to 0 as possible, but sometimes there are no options. Feel free to try another spline cage construction if you want.

Komplete the forhed with one short spline.

The top of the nose bridge should be fairly flat. Go to Left view and move the newly created vertices to match the outer contour of the nose.

There is a five sided patch below the eye that we need to take care of. Refine the lower segment once and split into 2 four sided patches with a new spline.

So far so good. Rember to use the Fuse tool if the surface doesn't show up in some patches.

The nostril is next. Put in 3 vertices on the newly created nose bridge spline.

In the left view, move the vertices so they fairly follow the outer countour of the nose.

Hmm, due to a minor misstake erlier, the vertices under the nose needs some re-arrangement. I forgot to place a vertice at the nostril.
The lower vertices should form the upper edge of the upper lip. Don't forget to keep an eye at the reference image next time ;o)

Then fine adjust the splines to follow the nose.
Tip: Move the reference image to the middle of the head to hide the splines at the back of the head.

Draw the two missing splines at the tip of the nose.

Refine the two segments at the side of the nose tip. Move them outward as in the top view image.

Move the vertex in the third image up in the nose to create the nostril.

Start at the green mark (weld here when spline is drawn) draw the spline down the side of the nose, up the nosgtril and down again to the bottom of the nose.
Forward to part 5
