The First Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever

This is Stephen Donaldsons publishing debut. Appearing in 1977 it attained levels of coherence and epic grandeur not seen in fantasy since Tolkien. In this trilogy, whose inception dates back to 19??, Donaldson demonstrates writing skills almost never encountered in first works and not often in any. His powers of imagination is equalled by few and surpassed by none in my experience.

The Story

Thomas Covenant, a writer, having finally had his first book accepted for publishing, learns that he has Leprosy. His wife, Joan, barely stopping to tell Thomas, takes their son, Roger, and leaves. When he returns home from the leprosarium, where he has learnt the skills necessary to survive with Leprosy, he finds himself alone, ostracised from society - and friendless.

One day - while in town - he sees a strange old man and is subsequently hit by a car. Knocked un-conscious he makes his first visit to "The Land".
